Adding the Backflip It! button
AOL
The current implementation of Backflip does not provide a means for AOL users to add the Backflip It! button to their browser.
In the meantime, if you do sometimes access the Web with Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator with versions 4.0 or higher, you will be able to add the button and upload bookmarks / favorites.
Internet Explorer 4.5 Mac
(a) First, go to Backflip "Get Tools." Then click the "Backflip It! Toolbar Button" link.
(b) The instructions below explain how to add the button to your Toolbar
- On the Mac menu, click Favorites and select "Organize Favorites."
- In the pop-up, locate the Toolbar Favorites folder and make sure it's open.
- From your screen, drag the text link, Backflip It! from the gray background to the very top of the Toolbar Favorites list.
- You did it! Now, look at your browser and you'll see Backflip It! below the Address bar.
Note: If you are having difficulty locating the Toolbar, please read below:
- On the Mac menu, select "View".
- See if "Favorites Bar" is checked.
- If it is not checked, select it.
- A bar should be visible below the Address bar.
Internet Explorer PC
To add the Backflip It! Button, you must first sign in to Backflip. Then click "Get Tools" near the top of the screen. Once there, click the "Backflip It! Button." Drag and drop the words "Backflip It!" (near the top left, in a gray background) onto the word "Links" in your browser. The screen has instructions and an illustration. If you are having trouble finding the Links Toolbar, click [help] from that screen for some easy instructions on making the Links Toolbar available.
If you have difficulty with that approach, here is a five-step process for adding the button to your Internet Explorer Links Toolbar:
- Go to the Get Tools page view and select the Backflip It! Button link
- Right click the link that you are unable to drag and drop (it is the one with the arrow pointing to it--not the animated example)
- Select "Add to Favorites" in the right click menu
- Select the "Create In" button in the pop-up window
- Highlight the links folder and press OK
Linux/SUN Netscape
Linux users rejoice! We can add the Backflip It! button to your Navigator Personal Toolbar. You'll have to do a little work, but it's pretty easy. Here's how to do it:
- Sign in to Backflip and go to "Get Tools"
- Right click and hold the "Backflip It!" link in the grey background for the pop-up menu
- Select "Add Bookmark for Link" from the pop-up menu
- Press ALT-B (on some systems CTRL-B, or alternatively, from the Bookmarks menu, choose Edit Bookmarks) to see the bookmark edit pop-up window
- Look for an entry named "javascript...."
- Right click and hold for the pop-up menu
- Select "Bookmark Properties"
- In the new window change the *Name* (not the Location) to "Backflip It!" and save
- Now, drag the Backflip It! bookmark onto "Personal Toolbar Folder". It should be placed in that folder at the top of the list.
- The Backflip It! button should be on your Personal Toolbar, which is located near the top of your browser under the Location field.
- Click this button anytime you find a Web page you want to backflip.
Note: If you are having difficulty finding the Personal Toolbar after you complete the above steps, see below:
Go to the View menu in Navigator. Make sure the "Personal Toolbar" listing is checked (this may be in the "Show" sub-menu). If it is checked, but the Backflip It! button is still not visible in the Toolbar, try going back to the Edit Bookmarks window (CTRL-b) and dragging the Backflip It! link directly under the "Personal Toolbar Folder," so that it is the top item in it. Then, it should be the farthest left item in the browser Personal Toolbar.
NeoPlanet
While the NeoPlanet Browser does not allow the addition of the Backflip It! button to the links bar, you can add it to your favorites list (which provides the exact same functionality). Here are the steps to follow:
- Sign in to Backflip.
- Go to the following URL: http://www.backflip.com/tbr/add_toolbar_ie.ihtml
- Look for the large "Backflip It!" link near the top of the page.
- Right-click this link and select "Add to Favorites..."
- Select a location for the "Backflip It!" link. You might want to keep it at the top-level for convenient access.
- Click OK.
- Now you should see a "Backflip It!" link in the folder that you selected.
When you are viewing a page that you would like to add to your Backflip account, simply click "Favorites" from the menu bar, select "Backflip It!", fill out the form, and the page will be instantly added to your Backflip account.
Netscape 4.0 Mac
- At the top of the screen, click on the Netscape icon.
- Select "Bookmarks" from this menu, which launches a window.
- In Backflip, go to "Get Tools" and click the "Backflip It! Button" link.
- Above Steps 1,2,3 will be the words "Backflip It!" in a grey background. Drag and drop these words into the bookmarks area. (Note: Follow these instructions - not the 3 steps on the screen).
- When you see "Backflip It!" in your bookmarks, drag that bookmark onto your desktop. You've just created an alias.
- You did it! Now, whenever you see a page you wish to add to Backflip, simply click the Backflip It! alias on your desktop.
The above method is preferred, but, alternately, if you'd like another place to put the Backflip It! button:
- In Backflip, go to "Get Tools" and click the "Backflip It! Button" link
- Above Steps 1,2,3 will be the words "Backflip It!" in a grey background. Hold the mouse button down on this link until the side menu appears. Select "Add Bookmarks for this link" from this menu.
- "Backflip It!" should be in your bookmarks - probably under "Personal Toolbar Folder". It will have a strange name like "void(open....)" but it does the job.
- Whenever you see a page you wish to add to Backflip, simply click this bookmark.
Once the button is on your desktop, you can click it whenever you find a Web page you like.
Netscape 4.5 Mac
First go to Backflip "Get Tools." Then click the "Backflip It! Button" link. There will be a set of instructions on the screen that describe how to add the button. Please follow these instructions to place the button onto your desktop.
Note: If you have difficulty with the on-screen instructions, you may wish to try the method below.
- First drag the button to your browser.
- Near the top of your browser, there's a Personal Toolbar. Using your mouse, don't click, but drag the Backflip It! link up to the toolbar. If you don't see the Personal Toolbar, go to Step B.
- On the browser menu, select View.
- Hold the cursor over the Show choice.
- See if the side menu has a check mark next to Personal Toolbar
- If the checkmark is not there, select Personal Toolbar.
- The Personal Toolbar should appear near the top of the browser. It will be below the Location Toolbar where you type Web addresses (URLs).
- If the Personal Toolbar is there but it looks "full" of buttons, that's OK. When your cursor turns into a "+" with a chain link, you can drop it 'on top' of any other button. It will just go between two existing buttons.
- Finish by dragging it from your toolbar and dropping it onto your desktop (it will become an alias.)
- You did it! Now, whenever you see a page you wish to add to Backflip, simply click the Backflip It! alias on your desktop.
Note: The 'button' is active from the desktop only. If you've placed a copy of it on the Toolbar, this will not function properly.
Netscape PC
To add the button, first sign in to Backflip. Then go to "Get Tools," which is available by clicking "Get Tools" near the top of the screen. Once there, click the "Backflip It! Button" link. You will be presented with a screen that allows you to easily add the button by dragging and dropping from the screen onto your Toolbar.
If you have difficulty with that approach here is a five-step process for adding the button to your Personal Toolbar:
- Right-click the Backflip It! icon (the icon that you can not drag and drop).
- Select "Add Bookmark" from the pop-up menu.
- Next to the Address Bar select the Bookmark button.
- On the Bookmark menu select "Edit Bookmarks."
- Drag the Backflip It! link (it is the last item on the list) directly under the words "Personal Toolbar Folder."
Opera
We have done some informal testing of Backflip with the Opera browser. It appears that Opera does not allow the addition of a Backflip It! button. You can however, add a Backflip It! link to your Hot List. The instructions to do so are below:
- Make sure the "Hot List" is open. If its not, select "Hot List" from the main "View" menu.
- Go to http://www.backflip.com/tbr/add_toolbar_other.ihtml
- Right click the gray box labeled Backflip It!
- Select "Copy Link Address" from the mouse menu.
- In the top half of your Hot List, select which folder you want to put the "Backflip It!" link in.
- Click the "+" icon in the middle of the Hot List (or click CTRL-T) to add a new item.
- In the pop-up, change the "Name" field to "Backflip It!"
- Paste the link you copied in step 4 in the field "URL" field.
- Click OK.
- Now you should see a "Backflip It!" link in the folder that you selected.
When you are viewing a page that you would like to add to your Backflip account, simply click "Backflip It!" from your Hot List, fill out the form, and the page will be instantly added to your Backflip account.

Internet Explorer 5 Error
If you have previously performed an Import or Export command in Internet Explorer, then the 'old path' must still be available. Taking care of this is quick and easy. The instructions are below.
- Go to Internet Explorer.
- From the File menu, choose Import and Export.
- In the pop-up click Next.
- In the next window choose "Export Favorites," and click Next.
- In the next window, leave the top level of "Favorites" highlighted and click Next.

- If Internet Explorer is exporting correctly, you should get a window congratulating you. Click Finish and a pop-up stating "Successfully Exported Favorites" will be shown. If not, your Internet Explorer is having difficulty exporting - you may wish to try again, paying close attention to the path selected in Step 6.
If you exported successfully, you can now try again in Backflip. Below are the steps to get there:
- Open your browser (Internet Explorer).
- Sign-in to Backflip.
- Go to "Get Tools."
- Near the left hand side of the screen click "Add Favorites."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upload.
Netscape Error
We rely on a programming language called "Java" to upload a copy of your bookmarks from Netscape. If Java is not enabled the upload process will hang on a blank page. The good news is that it's easy to enable:
- Go to Netscape and choose the Edit menu.
- Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
- In the resulting pop-up window, select "Advanced."
- On the right you will see a checkbox "Enable Java." If this is not checked, then check it and click OK.
- Now try to upload your bookmarks again.
Note: If you were attempting to upload during registration and then it hung up, your account was still created, since you completed Step 1. Go to www.backflip.com and sign-in with your User Name and Password - actually if you go to www.backflip.com you probably are already 'signed in' due to account creation. To upload your bookmarks:
- Go to "Get Tools"
- Near the left hand side of the screen click "Add Your [Bookmarks]/[Favorites]."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upload.
To add the Backflip It! button go to "Get Tools." Once there, click the "Backflip It! Button" link. You will be presented with a screen that allows you to easily add the button by dragging and dropping from the screen onto your Toolbar
Subsequent Uploads
Adding from another computer or the same computer is no problem. In the case where you add from the same computer and same browser, Backflip only adds bookmarks/favorites that are new since your last upload.
For another computer or browser Backflip basically will do a 'dumb' add of the other set. In other words it will not try to combine the contents of the "News" folder from two computers. Rather, it will create them separately. Also, if the same URL exists in different folders, Backflip will not attempt to delete one or the other. It will leave both.
In all cases, you have control over what gets uploaded. For instance, it is possible to upload specific folders only. During the add bookmarks/favorites process, a list will be displayed ofall the folders that are contained in your bookmark/favorites file. Each of these folders will have a check on the left side. To remove a folder from the upload, simply remove the check mark and Backflip will overlook those folders in the final upload of the data.
You should be aware that Backflip will always load all "loose" bookmarks/favorites (those not already in folders) and the bookmarks in your Personal Toolbar folder (Netscape) or Links Toolbar (Internet Explorer).
Below are the steps to upload to your additional bookmarks or favorites:
- Open your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer).
- Sign-in to Backflip.
- Go to "Get Tools."
- On the left hand side of the screen click "Add [Bookmarks]/[Favorites]."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upload.
How do I back up my account?
Follow the instructions below to export your Backflip account to a bookmark file.
- Sign into your Backflip Account.
- Go to the 'Get Tools' section and select 'Export Pages.'
- Click the Export button.
- A new window will open. into which your bookmark file will be loaded.
- Choose 'Save As' from the file menu and save this file to your hard drive. Netscape users: At the end of the file name add .htm, rather than the '.pl' extension that may be shown. You will also need to select HTML (if you use the Linux version select Source) from 'Save As Type' drop-down menu drop-down menu. Internet Explorer users: Select HTML only from the 'Save As Type' drop-down menu. (a)
- Close the pop-up window.
- You're done. (b)
You now have a 'backup' of your Backflip contents on your hard drive!
(a) Depending on the size of your Backflip account and your connection speed, it may take several minutes for the page to fully load. You must wait until the page is completely loaded before saving.
(b) Once the file is on your hard drive, you may view the contents directly or add it to your browser's bookmark file. To Import:
Netscape: Select Bookmarks, then Edit Bookmarks. Once in your Bookmarks, select File, then Import.
Internet Explorer: Select File, then Import and Export, and follow the instructions.
Page & Folder Maintenance
Edit/Delete a Folder
From within My Folders, click the folder you want to change. Next to the folder name, click "Edit." You can change folder information. The pages contained within that folder are not affected. - When you use the "Backflip It!" button on your Toolbar, there is an optional link in the pop up window. Click this link to create a new folder whenever you need it.
Edit a Page
To edit a page, click the Edit link next to the listing of the page you wish to edit. You can do this in My New Pages, or in a folder within My Folders. Make changes to the Title, Description and/or URL, or even change the folder location. Then save your changes.
Delete a Page
The quickest way to delete a page from Backflip is to click the [Delete] link next to the page listing. Also, you can delete a page in any of your main views by clicking the [Edit] link and then click the Delete button. This is more cumbersome though.
Refile a Page
Click the Edit link next to the listing of the page you wish to edit. When you're editing a page, at the bottom of the screen, select the new folder you want to place your page in. Click save, and you just re-filed it!

Backflip offers its users the ability to easily move and delete pages from folders in mass. To do so simply follow the steps below:
- Sign into to your Backflip account and go to the My Folder section of your account.

- Click the [Organize] link next to the folder title. You should now see the Organize Console and check boxes next to each of the page titles.

Show & Tell
Can I edit a shared page?
Unfortunately you cannot edit a page listing that has been shared with you.
To work around this you can copy the folder into your account. Once the folder is part of your private account you can edit and delete any of the links just as you would normally. If you would like more information on the Show & Tell feature, please review the FAQ on the site. There you find an in-depth explanation of this exciting new feature and answers to common questions about it.
How do I see who's seen my shared folder?
To view what others are saying about your folder and see who has viewed your folder, you will first want to select the folder that was shared. Click on [more comments], this will take you to a page to view comments, make additional comments, learn who has seen your folder and unshare a folder with someone.
How do I receive a shared folder?
Here are the steps for incorporating a shared folder into your account:
- Sharing invitation arrives in your email inbox.
- Follow the URL contained in the invitation.

The folder should now be in your Backflip account.
How to share

That's it, (s)he will no longer have access to that folder.
How to stop the updates
When you share a folder with a friend, Backflip will not send unsolicited email to that person. Backflip will, however, send that person an email notifying him/her of any updates made to the folder. Each time someone adds a new page to the folder, everyone who has access to the folder will receive an update. Your friend won't receive updates when you delete a page, or if someone changes their folder Name or Description. If you or your friends do not want to receive folder updates, the feature can be disabled.
Follow these simple instructions:
If your friends have incorporated the folder into their Backflip accounts:
- Open the shared folder.
- Click the edit link next to the folder title.
- Uncheck the box next to "Send Me Updates On This Folder."
- Click the "Save Changes" button.
If your friends have not incorporated the folder into their accounts:
- Open the shared folder.
- Uncheck the box labeled Send [email address] email updates as this folder changes.
- Click the Update button.
Subfolders is not automatic
Currently, when you share one of your Backflip folders with your friends you are only sharing that specific folder. The subfolders contained in that folder are not shared. If you want your friends to have access to a sub-folder you will have to extend a second invitation for that specific sub-folder. Daily Routine
